CCF Tribute Issue 3 2016 - page 5

TheCCFYouthCamp
was held at Nanyang
Girls’BoardingSchool
from 3 to 5September
2016. Themed ‘One
Step at a Time’, the objective
was to educateCCF youths on the
importance of managing expectations when experiencing
the ups and downs in life. Through a series of game stops,
the youths also learnt tomakemeaning of their life journey,
accept their circumstancesandpickuppositivecopingskills.
The first stop in the journey saw the youths making their
own ‘Tree of Life’. Participants had to draw their own ‘tree’
comprising the different people and situations that have
helpedshaped their life. Illustrating theseprovidedoverview
and clarity that every encounter was a life lesson. The
youths then set out to MacRitchie Reservoir for kayaking.
There, the strongwaves andwinds represented the ‘storms
of life’. The youths learnt about the importance of ‘paddling
on’ toovercome life’sadversities. The last stationof theday
saw participants fitting pieces of a self-reflection puzzle to
recapitulate the lessons learnt in the first day.
Day two of the camp was all about tele-matches which
focused on inculcating values of resilience and teamwork
in the youths. Participants headed to East Coast Park for
an exciting game of Archery Tag. Through the activity, the
youths learnt about focusingonwhat they could control and
accepting situations that were beyond their limits. Much to
their surprise, the youths were then tasked to cook their
own dinner and catch Pokemons at their next two game
stops! These were both coping methodologies but each
activitywasmetwithmixed reactions.Theyouths learnt that
everyone had different ways of coping.
With full tummies and phones full of new Pokemons, the
youths set out on their final activity - a scavenger hunt
to search for different parts of a tent. Upon collecting the
different pieces, the youths had to build the tent as a team
to symbolise the strengths, comfort and shelter they had
built for themselves as a form of protection. The day ended
with the youths putting their ‘Trees of Life’ together to form
a ‘Forest of life’, illustrating the importance of forming a
community of support for each other in good times and in
bad times.
