InitiatedbyCCF in2009,Photovoice isa therapeutic
photographyproject for childhood cancer survivors.
Back for its fifth run, the two-day workshop aimed
to help CCF beneficiaries reflect and express
their perceptions, values, or insights about cancer
experiences and life.
Held from 1 to 2 July at Objectifs - Centre for
Photography and Film, the workshop revolved
around the theme “Unreachable”, which allowed
the 15 participants to address questions not
commonly discussed. The youth survivors first
began writing down burning questions that were
of concern to them, before dividing into groups to
discuss and curate their photographs through long
exposure techniques.
All smiles after presenting their photographs.

Unreachable
In life, we all have an
unspeakable secret,
an irreversible regret,
anunreachable dream,
and anunforgettable love.

Towards the end of the day, participants
sieved through their precious photographs
and selected a handful for print. However,
they were caught by surprise when they had
to present the photo that they liked least.
Looking at the unsatisfactory photos presented
an opportunity to look at their failures, the
trials and errors, and what might be seen as
not aesthetically pleasing. And in seeking for
an answer to the questions in life, participants
shared that they were confronted with unmet
expectations, or that they learnt to forgive and
accept the imperfections in life.
The workshop concluded with an exhibition of
the participants’ letters of reflections and the
unsatisfactory photographs – the side that is
usually not presentedbut present. As oneof our
participants shared, “Beingbadat something is
the first step, until I become good at it.”
