The Survivors Service Learning Project
is an
overseas project to provide youth survivors with
opportunities to share their experiences of coping
with cancer with other survivors from like-minded
organisations in the region. The project also serves
as a platform to help the survivors build up their
self-confidence and educate them to ‘pay it forward’.
In 2015, the annual project was held from 5 to 8
June at Brunei in collaboration with Yayasan Kanser
Kanak-Kanak (YASKA) Brunei and Raja Isteri Pengiran
Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital. The survivors visited
the homes of children with cancer and inpatients at
RIPAS. The cross-cultural experience also broadened
the survivors’ perspectives through the interactions with
fellow survivors from different cultural backgrounds, at
the same time, building in them a sense of connection
and normalcy.

SURVIVORSSUPPORTSERVICE
Survivors of childhood cancer should be empowered to
develop a sense of normalcy and confidence as they
step into a new but important phase of their lives. The
Survivors Support Service aims to provide continual
support to childhood cancer survivors by enhancing their
well-being and personal growth through using different
platforms for them to share and support each other, and
providing opportunities to realise their full potential.
In May 2015, CCF organised its first sea
adventure-based activity – “We are Surventure!” for youth
survivors. The activity aimed to empower the survivors
to gain a more positive self-concept and insights to cope
better with the life challenges through achievements
outside their comfort zones. Through the water sports
activities, the programme also aimed to increase the
survivors’psychosocial adaptationandcopingbyproviding
an outlet for normalcy. It was also an opportunity for the
survivors to connect withother youth survivors through the
adventureexperience andmeaningful reflections.
