BACK-TO-SCHOOLSERVICE
Returning back to school can be a challenge for children
with cancer due to the prolonged period of absence from
school during their hospitalisationandmedical treatments.
To help facilitate the child’s reintegration back to school,
the Back-to-School (BTS) Service offers a wide range
of services such as conducting school visits, classroom
talks and engaging the school authorities, teachers,
counsellors and classmates to support the child’s
unique needs. By engaging in regular dialogue with the
caregiver, the child’s academic, social and emotional
well-beings are carefully monitored to ensure that he/
she is adjusting well in the school environment. The
BTS caseworker also works directly with the child to
ease his/her anxieties and stress of returning to school
after a period of prolonged absence.
In 2010, CCF introduced the Back-to-School bursary
and scholarship awards scheme to assist and encourage
children and youths who have returned to school to
excel in their academic studies. To further recognise
their efforts and achievement of good results at National
Examinations, CCF introduced a new category known as
the “Special Awards” in 2015. For the first time, bursary
awards and scholarships were given to youths enrolled in
universities in recognition of their achievements.
