Art Therapy
Children may face challenges in articulating their emotional and
psychological concerns especially when they are under stressful
circumstances. Through Art Therapy, children are able to project
their feelings and inner conflicts through visual forms in a safe and
supportive environment, allowing them to gain some form of control in
decision-making. In times of uncertainty, the role of creation empowers a child
and also helps in enhancinghis/her self-esteem and self-awareness.
Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses image-makingwith different
art materials within a supportive relationship with the therapist to explore
thoughts, feelings, patterns and issues of concerns to support growth,
recovery, change and healing.
In 2015, CCF launched the Paint Pals Programme that connects children with
cancer in hospitals from around the world as they share their experiences
and encourage each other through images and words. The programme
aims to reduce the psychological isolation experienced by inpatients by
connecting them through drawing exchanges via mail with children from a
different cultural background. CCF has successfully matched beneficiaries
with children of CCFHong Kong andYayasan KasihAnak Kanker, Indonesia
since the launch of the pilot programme in September 2015.
PlayTherapy
Children communicate through the metaphor of play. Unlike regular play,
Play Therapy helps children address andmake sense of life experiences
by playing them out at their own pace.
Play Therapist uses a Play Therapy toolkit which includes guided
imagery, puppets, sand, art and craft, and clay that provides a safe
platform for children to express their feelings about the experiences that
they areunable toaddress in real life. Through this creative intervention,
the Play Therapist is able to help children cope with difficult emotions
and find solutions to their problems by playing a catalytic role in bringing
about a positive change in theway children think and feel.
The Play Therapist also conducts Filial Play sessions with parents by
equipping themwith knowledge on how they can better interact with their
children through Play Therapy techniques. Parents are guided by a Play
Therapist to conduct non-directive “special play time” with their children
whichhelps in fostering theparent-child relationship.
